LA Scene: Where to Get Serious About Shopping

With the arrival of Spring/Summer weather, not only do we feel the need to shed layers, but also last season’s wardrobe. This season – I’m all about strategically placed cutouts, flirty high-waisted skirts and shoes with fringe. There are also some trends I could do without, like gingham. And then there are the items that never go out of style – like a comfortable tank, jeans and a cool pair of kicks.

When you live in LA, there’s a plethora of options to choose from and we have all the usual suspects, along with all of the couture designers I can’t afford – Rodeo Drive and parts of Melrose Place are only for window shopping. And in any case, I prefer boutiques – they tell you a lot about the style of a particular city. LA is one-of-a-kind and these are my favorite spots for exploring my own style, whether I’m feeling a boho, classic, trendy or casual vibe.

Reformation (West Hollywood)
This boutique’s mantra is killer style that doesn’t harm the environment. Sourcing sustainable fabrics and vintage garments for the designs, this LA-Made company lists their practices on the website.  Gracing the racks of this boutique are romantic dresses, a variety of flattering cutouts and sultry tanks that let you flaunt your individual style and don’t put too much of a dent into your wallet. Perfect options for the beach, brunch or a fun, flirty night out.

Library (Larchmont Village)
If I step foot in here, I WILL buy something. They have some of the best pieces from my favorite brands – IRO, Rag & Bone and Frame Denim – and their sales team always pulls the best looks. You always come out with more than you expect, but every single item I buy always becomes a closet staple that I wear over and over again because it’s classic, but anything but ordinary. It’s smart shopping (ahem, Library).

hip’tique (Santa Monica)
Located two blocks from the beach on Main Street, this establishment is exactly what you’d expect from the laid-back Westside. Their storefront lures you in with wide-brimmed hats, swimsuits and boho dresses, skirts and tops that are hip and breezy enough for the beach vibe, whether you’re staying local or jetting off to Mexico. Favorite brands in this boutique include L Space, Parker and Tigerlily.

American Rag (West Hollywood)
A legendary establishment when it comes to LA shopping, American Rag is the epitome of Hollywood fashion and a place to be seen – that’s why you head to the attached Café Midi. Hipsters and fashionistas everywhere flock to this uber cool denim paradise full of the latest trends and hot jean brands – if you can’t find a pair here, I can’t help you. It’s not all jeans – another highlight is a kick-ass vintage section for truly one-of-a-kind pieces. But no pictures, please – they’re not allowed.

Time to Shop ‘Til You Drop … or at least until your credit card has had enough. Whichever comes first. Usually the latter.
